MEMORANDUM
Date: February 22, 1995
To: Xenia S. Miller
From: Beverly V. McDermott
Subject: Photos of 2760 Conversation Pit and Entry Divider
Attached are photos of the 2760 conversation pit taken at various angles to show you the brass rail which has been temporarily installed and two sets of cushions which were made by Mr. Bayles. (I took the photos today and caught Wayne in the process of taking the winter covers off the pit cushions. Thus, the summer cushions are shown with the winter rug still in place. We hurriedly placed the pillows around for the photos - Carolyn will do a better job of arranging them.)
Specifically, the photos show:
· The rail temporarily installed with braces and 'C' clamps. A corner of the black brace is visible in Photos A and B between the top step and the second step. The 'C' clamp is visible in Photo C at the base of the bottom rail post. Just wanted you to be aware that these items would, of course, not be used in a permanent installation. A non-visible anchored sleeve would be used in a permanent installation.
· Two sets of cushions which Mr. Bayles made from scrap fabric. One set (next to the steps - good shot in Photo D) was made entirely of the rubber foam (plain fabric) and the other set has a wood frame inside (striped fabric). From the photos you cannot tell the difference - so far all the 'sitters' prefer the rubber foam cushions (and they would be much easier to handle).
· The seat cushions on the mock-ups extend too far beyond the marble seat base. The seat cushions should extend only 1/2' beyond the marble seat base - Mr. Bayles will adjust the seat cushion. The extension of the back cushion above the marble floor is fine.
Attached for reference is a drawing from Kevin Roche's office which details the dimensions of the cushions and the rail.
Thought you might also like to see photos of the entry divider after it was recovered with the silk fabric and the sari borders. The new coverings really brighten up the entry.
Please call me if you have any questions.
b/c Beverly V. McDermott
