With its vibrant palette and careful arrangement of figures around a central action, this painting is representative of the Northern Mannerist style, which flourished in the Netherlands during the sixteenth and the early seventeenth centuries. Such works aimed to delight the viewer with their mastery of the human figure and the exploitation of its dynamic potential. Bloemaert’s later paintings, like this one, show a relaxation of the highly exaggerated poses and gestures that were typical of this style.
Mannerist compositions frequently made reference to uncommon subjects. The victorious general in this coronation scene may be David, shown receiving the spoils of war after Israel’s defeat of the Ammonites at Rabbah.
