As if emerging from a thick fog, a classical male figure appears orange, surrounded by a bright, diffuse yellow light. While many details of the photograph recede into the background, certain elements appear in focus, such as the figure’s laurel wreath and constellations of bubbles around his visage.
Titled
Dante’s Inferno, this photograph is one of a series by Andres Serrano produced during the late 1980s and early '90s. Highly controversial during its time, the series depicts religious and classical figures submerged in various bodily fluids, such as blood or urine. Serrano, of Honduran and Afro-Cuban descent, was raised Roman Catholic. In the style of the Baroque tradition, the artist meant for these transgressive works to shock viewers into a deeper understanding of their faith and spirituality.Exhibition History
