(Theodore Schempp, Brodhead, Wisconsin); Purchased by the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1939 (39.80). ------- {1}The sale date – July 1906 – and stock number 15085 is noted in the catalogue raisonné Vuillard, The Inexhaustible Glance: Critical Catalogue of Paintings and Pastels, volume II, no. VIII-131, p. 891 (illustration). {2}Hôtel Drouot, Paris, Catalogue des tableaux appurtenant à M. Albert Bernier et divers amateurs, 23 November 1910, no. 54. {3}Although Georges Bernheim’s collection was looted by the Nazis in 1940, this painting was in Indianapolis by 1939.
