Baumann arrived in Brown County in 1910 and settled in to devote himself to color woodblock printmaking, which earned him a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco five years later.
His small crayon drawing of Harden Hollow, west of Nashville, was scaled up for the cutting of the four wood blocks needed for each of the colors he indicated in the margin of the drawing (black, gray, orange and green sage). The blocks were then printed in sequence to build the complete image.
