Among those who sat for Strang, England's best portrait engraver, were such literary lions as Rudyard Kipling, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas Hardy and John Masefield, a poet of the sea. Masefield is immortalized by the lines: "I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and sky; And all I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer her by." Strang's mezzotinted portrait, printed by his son David in 1909, corresponded with the publication of Masefield's first novels.
"John Masefield, now Poet-Laureate, when he came to London as a young man, formed an immediate friendship with my father, who kept open house on Sunday nights for supper, and he often used to come."
-David Strang
