百菜魚図
Shōka studied under his father, Kazan, and his father's favorite pupil, Chinzan. He carried on their philosophy that true painting could only be pursued by intensely studying the techniques and methods of ancient masters and then applying them to painting from life (shasei). This tour de force from Shōka's later years brims with the tenor and flavor of the Kazan-Chinzan lineage. It is also an auspicious painting in the sense that it celebrates the abundance of nature.
