April 5, 1956 Mr. Irwin Miller 301 Washington Street Columbus, Indiana Dear Mr. Miller, Recently, I seat you two drawings showing additional landscape 'thinking.'
The one entitled, 'Master Site Plan,' represents my latest suggestions.
You will note that I have relocated the tennis court. I rather like this better from an aesthetic point of view.
I hope you I.tle tin location if proposed screened Pavillion at the end of the 'Locust Allen.' From this point, one can have a variety of outlooks, i.e., (1) down the Allee, (2) over the meadow to the West, (3) through the pierced screen to the North, and (4) through the dogwood grove to the East.
In order to gain scope in the area to the North of the dining room, I have purposely avoided placing any garden arrangements. Instead, I am suggesting a dogwood grove that one looks under and through so that the space continues through to the hedges at boundary. But here again, the scope is increases by the nature and disposition of these hedges.
You will observe that I have also indicated some additional tree planting. This is to strengthen the overall composition, help screen out undesirable views (with evergreens), and to add variety to the whole scheme.
Of course, there is a great deal more detailed planting that can color to the whole, but I would like to defer that until I can talk with you and Mr. Miller again.
One other point, I am suggesting a barrier at service drive where it starts to meadow. This is to control unwanted traffic in this area and also to reserve that cobblestone drive as an integral part of the North Garden.
