Re: Miller House

Dear Roger:
We have checked with Fairbanks-Morse for details on their water softener with the following results:
The units described in the advertisement serves a family of four in areas where the water hardness is not too critical with a service requirement of once a year. It supplies about 1500 gallons in a 24 hour period with a maximum of nine gallons a minute flowing through it at any given time. It measures 30' x 30' x 54' high. It would cost $435.00.
Our requirements are based on using 2000 gallons a day and with a possible instantaneous demand of 21 gallons per minute. Two units would be required to fulfill these conditions. With a hardness condition varying from 6 to 19 grains you could expect to add salt to the unit every two months. Fairbanks-Morse provides no service for this and the responsibility would fall to the owner.
The space requirement of two of these units is such as to over crowd a space already cramped.
The first cost, lack of service and space requirement of the Fairbanks-Morse unit are the reasons on which we recommend that the specified water softening system be employed for this installation.
Very truly yours,
SAMEUL R. LEWIS AND ASSOCIATES
