Color PaletteA Dutch member of Pont-Aven's international school of artists, Verkade traveled to Brittany in 1891, where he painted this whimsical view of the Kerzellec family farm.
This scene illustrates Verkade's application of Pont-Aven School ideas. Forms are reduced to flat, shadowless shapes and gently curving surface patterns. The color scheme, with its use of rose and gold, is highly personal rather than realistic. Although this farm may have been bustling with activity, Verkade's image is motionless and dreamlike - a synthesis of visual memory and imagination.
