Color PaletteWorld War II was covered on all sides by units of combat photographers serving in the armed forces. Their purpose was not only to compile a photographic history of the conflict, but also to provide images that would have propaganda value on the home front. [new para] Alexander Ustinov photographed these two Soviet tanks engaging in the great counteroffensive that stopped the German advance on Moscow in the brutally cold December of 1941. This heroic photograph soon appeared in Pravda, the Soviet Union’s state-controlled newspaper.
