Color PaletteGenoels was among the last of a great century of Netherlandish landscape painter-etchers, exemplified by Rembrandt and Jacob van Ruisdael.
The preparatory drawing for the etching was made with pen and ink, which gave the artist a good sense of the effect that his etching needle would produce when its lines were bitten with acid into the copper plate, inked and printed. The printing process reversed the image.
