Berber women weave wrappers, head shawls, saddlebags, cushions, blankets, and rugs. Their weaving combines two techniques: flat weave for the plain sections, and different colored weft inlays and knots for patterned areas. Berber weavings are known for their vibrant colors and repetition of geometric design elements.
In almost all areas of Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, Berber weaving is a female art, often conducted in a communal fashion with other women. The majority of textiles are made for use in one’s own household, and the rest are traded at the annual markets.
