The column-like forms refer to the upright human body. Layer upon layer of fabric and stitch suggests time and accumulation of experience… The interior surfaces are covered with fine lines printed from maps, alluding to our internal compasses – the patterning that occurs within our brains as we respond to life’s piling on of experiences.
-Barbara Lee Smith
Barbara Lee Smith’s expertise in machine embroidery has gained her international recognition in the field of contemporary fiber art. She did not have new work available for sale when the IMA curator asked her to submit slides of her work for consideration. However, she later created new pieces for the IMA to choose from.
