Lucas van Leyden emulated the engravings of his slightly older contemporary, Albrecht Dürer, and, finally meeting in 1521, the two masters traded prints. Some contemporary writers actually preferred the clarity and story-telling ability of Lucas.
"After his death [Lucas'] prints became more and more expensive, especially because the Netherlandish print lovers, whose countryman he had been, drove prices higher and higher, endeavoring as in a contest to acquire more and better prints."
