Cranach was appointed court painter to Elector Frederick the Wise of Saxony in 1505, a title he retained for the rest of his life, never again venturing from his workshop in Wittenburg.
The inclusion of the coats of arms of the Dukedom of Saxony and of the Prince Elect of Saxony in St. George and the Dragon as well as in almost of all of Cranach's prints, suggest that they were made for the Elector of Saxony and enjoyed his copyright protection.
