Basic cardboard packing material forms the ground of Judy Rifka’s minimalist composition, providing an utterly flat surface on which she carefully applied an abstract shape. In the artist’s understanding, the cardboard “is allowed to be itself,” and denies any reading of pictorial depth. While an arrow on the back indicates the direction the work was first hung at New York’s Bykert Gallery in 1974, Cardboard Painting may be hung in any orientation. Rifka’s dramatically reductive formal language, unusual choice of material, and variable format challenge the most basic assumptions about painting.
