The Movement of Water
In the frozen claws of the wave breaking at the upper left and the stylized treatment of the swirling water in the foreground, Hiroshige presents the viewer with an abstracted yet highly convincing image of the famous whirlpools of Awa.
Iwami simply gives us a gathering of several motifs that convey a similar sense of the vastness and beauty of the sea and the surging energy of waves.
Iwami’s prints focus on water and its flow. She is amazing in her ability to use the grain and texture of wood to produce images of water. Unlike the masters of traditional woodblock art, she executes the entire printing process herself, from cutting the blocks to rubbing the prints.
