いたそう・寛政年間女郎の風俗, from the series 32 Aspects of Customs and Manners 風速三十二相
In this series Yoshitoshi depicted thirty-two women from different historical periods from the Kansei era (1789–1800) to the Meiji period (1868–1912), varying their clothes and expressions accordingly.
Here a courtesan is getting the name of her lover tattooed on her arm. She turns away from the painful needle while biting on her scarf to stifle any moans, yet the coquettish tilt of her head and her sidelong glance demonstrate her complete and heartfelt willingness to undergo the “operation.” The image is truly alluring.
