Color PaletteMrs. John Held Jr. (Margaret Schuyler James Held); purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1971
- Painted from a vantage point high in a building near New York’s Central Park, Held transforms the massive skyscrapers into flat geometric patterns of color and light.
- Liberal use of the white paper helps define the sharp angularity of the buildings’ sunlit façades.
- Held began his career as a commercial artist, and his illustrations defined the extravagance and exuberance of the Roaring Twenties. With the onset of the Great Depression, however, the artist began to create simple, austere views of the Manhattan skyline.
