During the early years of World War II, Dufy often painted views of his studio at Perpignan, in southern France. This interior is filled with a warm Mediterranean glow and a calm order at odds with the turmoil of the time.
After an early career working with the bold colors and handling of Fauvism, Dufy adopted a loose, elegant mode of painting. This canvas, rendered in his typically fluid style, suggests that Dufy has recorded his spontaneous response to the scene. On the easel is an image of a violin, no doubt referencing his love of music. A nude sculpture, sketches, and one of the artist's lithographs complete the picture of an active studio.
