Color PaletteFrame by frame, Stefana McClure traced the English subtitles for the 1985 Akira Kurosawa film Ran onto Japanese wax transfer paper. The artist chose this paper because it retained traces of color as many overlapping layers of crisp letters were scratched into its surface.
As someone who has lived in Ireland and Japan, McClure's work deals with language and cultural translation. She has also used transfer paper to replicate newspapers, short stories, and bilingual dictionaries. This piece replicates the size of the television set on which McClure viewed Ran, a Japanese film based on Shakespeare's King Lear. Here, the subtitles of a full-length film are condensed into one pictorial document.
