Color Palette(Fendrick Gallery, Chevy Chase, Maryland); purchased by the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1963.
Bonnard was one of many young French artists who were inspired by the Japanese color woodblock prints that began appearing in Europe in the late 19th century. He found their bold, flat shapes well-suited to the direct appeal of poster design, which he employed to a startling degree in this poster for La Revue blanche. A single brownish shape defines a fashionable woman (Misia Natanson), a street urchin and the back of a top-hatted gentlemen bending to read the posted copies of the magazine.
For Bonnard, a poster's lettering was not an afterthought, but an integral part of the artistic design. The "l" in la hangs like an umbrella from the woman's arm and the "a" is tucked into her pocket.
