• Best known for his portraits of famous Parisians, Carolus-Duran also painted landscapes. This one, his first major work, shows his awareness of the Barbizon School. Courbet's influence is also apparent, especially in the broad sweeps of the palette knife and the sonorous greens and browns of forest shade. The canvas is probably set in Fontainebleau, the artist’s favorite site during this period.
• The relationship of the couple strollingin the forest is unclear. The woman, who appears to be wearing the garb of mourning, resembles the artist’s mother.
