Color PaletteThe first owner of this watercolor, Turner’s great admirer John Ruskin, described it poetically in 1843: “The shower is here half-exhausted, half passed by . . . the white torrent, swelled by the sudden storm flings up its hasty jets of springing spray to meet the returning light . . . but vanish in the shafts of sunlight: hurrying, fitful wind-woven sunlight.”
This watercolor was modeled on Turner’s 1792 version and was among 120 reworkings of earlier subjects in a series called Picturesque Views in England and Wales designed to show his progress as a master watercolorist and an interpreter of the transient forces of nature.
