Throughout his career Pissarro maintained that his goal was to record nature as he saw it. This early landscape is typical of his work of the 1860s and shows the influence of Charles Daubigny and the Barbizon School, artists dedicated to the faithful depiction of nature.
The stable composition based on horizontals and the lively brushwork of the foliage show reverence for Corot, whom Pissarro cited as his teacher. This canvas's rather somber tones, typical of Barbizon painting, were replaced by a brighter palette in the 1870s when Pissarro embraced Impressionism.
