See Galerie Heim, Paris, "Tableaux de Maitres Anciens," Paris, 1956, catalogue no. 1 (illustration) and the review by W.V., "Current and Forthcoming Exhibitions," Burlington Magazine 98 (December 1956), pp. 458-459.
This scene depicts three ruffians seated at a simple tavern table sparsely set with bread and sausage. The two figures offering wine undoubtedly have ulterior motives in keeping the glasses full—while one pours another drink, the other is shown slyly picking the pocket of the man in front of her.
The Concert exemplifies the Baroque style. Valentin—a Frenchman who went to Rome to paint—broke all the rules of classicism to achieve maximum theatricality and convincing naturalism in his paintings. He was attracted to painting people and things taken from everyday life, rather than religious scenes.
