Henry Augustus Berkeley Craven (1776–1836) and his brother Keppel Richard Craven (1779–1851) are shown in so-called Van Dyck dress, with old-fashioned lace collars and cuffs. These costumes evoke the Flemish painter Sir Anthony van Dyck’s elegant portraits of the English aristocracy from the 17th century. The large columns on the left side of the painting suggest monumental architecture. Together with the landscape in the background, they are meant to indicate the vast scale of the gentlemen’s estate. These devices were also hallmarks of Van Dyck’s portraits.
