The inscription on the base gives the date and states that a certain Li De “had this stone image respectfully made for his deceased older sister,” praying that she would be reborn in the Western Pure Land. The completeness of this example makes it rare. The fine-grained stone and crisp carving suggest it is from Shandong province. The thinness of the sculpture and simplified back indicate it was meant for frontal presentation. The disproportionately large hands and head together with its “archaic smile” are typical of the period. The appealing, welcoming aura of the image is reinforced by the mudras, or gestures, for peace (right hand) and charity (left hand).
