Color PaletteJohn and Cornelius Varley were members of Dr. Monro's circle of landscape artists by 1800. Cornelius was equally skilled as a fabricator of optical instruments including his Graphic Telescope, which he patented in 1811.
By pointing the lens of the Graphic Telescope toward a subject, an artist would see a reflected image superimposed on a sheet of paper, which could then be traced.
The inscription indicates that this drawing is a secondary tracing of a drawing made by John Varley with the aid of the Graphic Telescope in 1812.
