Adams first visited Yosemite on a family vacation in 1916 and returned every year. By 1938 he had a studio in Yosemite Valley, a home inherited from his father-in-law in 1936.
Adams was a proponent of straight, unmanipulated photography. Every detail of this view up the Merced River is in sharp, clear focus, with the sky darkened to throw the etched, rocky face of Half Dome into strong relief.
Adams was commissioned by the National Park Service in 1931 to photograph Yosemite for publications promoting the park.
