This "Little Shaver," a six-year-old, 41-inch-tall newsboy peddling the Indianapolis News, posed for Hine in August 1908. [new para] Hine, who had been hired in 1907 by the philanthropic National Child Labor Committee, traveled throughout the East and South photographically documenting the harsh, unsafe conditions of children working in fields, mines, factories, and canneries. [new para] Armed with Hine’s documentation, the NCLC worked for passage of federal and state legislation to outlaw most forms of child labor.
