Arundel Castle, the ancient and magnificently sited residence of the Duke of Norfolk, strings out along a ridge overlooking the broad Sussex coastal plain. Pyne made sketches on site and at the nearby ports of Littlehampton and Shoreham in 1841, which he then worked up into several watercolors in his London studio.
Pyne had a loyal patron residing in Arundel, the brewer George Constable, Jr. He was no relation to the painter John Constable, but he was a collector of his landscapes.
