Unlike the more conventional geometric patterns of pieced quilts, appliquéd designs were adapted by individual quiltmakers rather than precisely copied. In this typical nineteenth-century appliquéd quilt, the bold and busy patterns are rendered in intense shades of green, red and yellow.
Pineapple, one of the popular designs of the period, appeared frequently in decorative arts. Whether carved on furniture or appliquéd on a quilt, the pineapple represented hospitality. This quilt, which is magnificently quilted, depicts four large pineapples in the central area. Smaller pineapples are placed on a scrolling vine that surrounds the central design.
