Bernard was inspired by the themes and grace of classical sculpture. The columnar form of this work offers a continuous series of gentle curves typical of his approach. The figure is based on a marble version that Bernard chiseled from a stone block.
His simplified forms and regular rhythms are also part of the French Art Deco movement.
