Accession NumberWebster Collection, Gift of Mrs. Gerrish Thurber
CopyrightMrs. Gerrish Thurber, Indianapolis, Indiana; given to Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1979.
In her lifetime, Webster designed more than thirty-three different quilt patterns. In the early 1920s, with the cooperation of two friends, she set up the Practical Patchwork Company in her home in Marion, Indiana. There she sold patterns, stamped and basted tops and even finished quilts. Her pioneer industry, one the most successful in the country, was in operation for more than fifteen years. Primrose Wreath, with its’ beautifully designed wavy border and its four corners protruding and extending beyond the sides, shows another innovative treatment of the border by Webster. Traditional feather wreath quilting inside the primrose wreaths enhances the beauty of this colorful quilt.
