A 1932 Guggenheim fellowship afforded Cook a year in Mexico to study the fresco techniques of the leading Mexican muralists. Headquartered in Taxco, he spent much of his time making dramatic portraits in dry brush and ink of the peasants who came to the city for Sunday markets.
Cook translated some of his Mexican portrait drawings into lithographs back in the United States.
