- This view of the myriad facades and rooftops of the Moroccan city of Fez relies on the precise graphic style and geometric emphasis of French painter Bernard Boutet de Monvel.
- During World War I the artist served in the military in North Africa. Enchanted by Morocco, he remained there for several years after the war, painting a series of views of Fez at different times of day.
- Stylistically independent, Boutet de Monvel was not engaged by the radical approaches of the era’s avant-garde artists. The prolific landscape painter and society portraitist consistently created meticulous images based upon crisp geometric forms.
