This sparkling coastal view is one of the few landscapes in this gallery by an English painter. John Brett was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of British artists who admired the sincerity of late-medieval art. They worked with painstaking accuracy, based on careful observation. Brett even became a respected student of natural phenomena.
While Brett's Italian seascape glows with brilliant color and luminosity, it does not rely on an Impressionist approach. Brett's image is rendered in minute detail, with precise brushstrokes. In the distance he offers a glimpse of the isle of Capri.
