- Heat—and brilliant Mediterranean sunlight—are the powerful sensations of this coastal view. The setting is Leucate, in the French province of Languedoc (now called Roussillon), near the Spanish border.
- De Monfreid was an independently wealthy painter, well known for his generous support of Paul Gauguin during his years in Tahiti.
- While de Monfreid experimented with several progressive styles, he remained most attached to Impressionist principles. Here he captured the scene’s intense light but also conveyed the solidity of the small hut and rocky shore.
