- The laundress recalls the peasant types who modeled for the Munich Academy’s life drawing classes, while the verdant outdoor setting reveals the artist’s self-directed outdoor studies during his time abroad.
- Wash Day, Bavaria was the first painting Adams sent to the United States for exhibition. In 1886 it was shown at the National Academy of Design, and in 1889 it appeared at the Art Association of Indianapolis (now the IMA). Thereafter, the painting hung in his Muncie studio.
- Dedicated to furthering his artistic skills, Adams had trained first in London at the South Kensington School of Art and continued his studies at the Munich Academy.
