- With a sure command of the dotted technique of Neo-Impressionism, Van de Velde depicted his sister’s father-in-law reading in the garden of their summer home in Belgium. The artist was attracted to the style after seeing Seurat’s work in Brussels in 1887.
- The curving path and chair suggest Van de Velde’s growing interest in surface pattern. The young artist was soon to abandon painting in favor of a career as a designer and architect.
- This frame, made recently by the IMA’s frame conservator, was inspired by original examples of Van de Velde’s frames, which follow Seurat’s practice of decorating a dark blue border with dots that enhance the adjacent colors of the painting.
