Abbott proposed to produce a photographic index of urban architecture that she titled "Changing New York" as her assignment for the Depression-era Federal Art Project.
This house at 135 Joralemon Street in Brooklyn was one of the places that showed the "fantastic contrast between old and new" that Abbott set out to chronicle. Built in 1833, this Federal-style farmhouse was a relic of the days when this part of Brooklyn was still rural, but which in May 1936, when Abbott photographed it, was wedged between two apartment buildings.
