My work is involved with the interplay between surface and image. In the Zig Zag Series (1979-1983), I stitched together strips of cotton rickrack, which formed a surface of wiggly lines. This was then airbrushed, and an image was embroidered on the surface to echo the zigzag lines in an apparent third dimension. The entire surface seems to ripple or fold. The fragmentary nature of the piece suggests that the situation created exists outside of time, as well as outside of reality.
