• Delavallée was a regular visitor to Pont-Aven from 1881 to 1893, but, unlike Sérusier, he did not come under the influence of Gauguin. Instead, this idyllic setting recalls the pastoral scenes of J.-F. Millet and Camille Pissarro.
• Delavallée’s observation of Breton life is evident in the thatched roofs, wooden gate, and woman’s clothing–all typical images of this region on the west coast of France.
• While Sérusier experimented with lithography, which requires drawing on top of a stone or plate, Delavallée employed the more traditional method of etching, creating realistic landscapes out of innumerable carefully-incised lines.
