Color PaletteThis design served as the title page for a group of six prints. The claim of "Nouvelles cheminées à la mode," or "Fashionable new chimneys," indicates that they were promoted as more progressive styles of ornamentation. The decoration departs from the weighty grandeur of an earlier generation. Narrower proportions, blank space, slender moldings, and lower relief carving anticipate the increasing delicacy that would come in ensuing decades. These forms, however, still retain a sense of rigid formality, and do not yet possess the gentle, rhythmic freedom of the full rococo. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
