Color PaletteThe Hôtel de Roquelaure (1695) in Paris was redesigned between 1724 and 1733 in the latest rococo style under the direction of Leroux and the celebrated ornamental sculptor Nicolas Pineau (1684-1754). Rectilinear doors, door frames, and wainscoting support a thoroughly rococo design. The slender curving moldings and carvings, C-scrolls, shell motifs, and organic forms are all characteristic of the fashionable, modern style. These moldings and carved elements would have been gilded and set against an off-white wall. This would contribute to the richness and elegance of the interior. A corresponding lightness and sense of frivolity are created by the popular pastoral subjects of the overdoors. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
