Color PaletteLepautre was a prolific designer and engraver whose work contributed to the definition of the sumptuous Louis XIV style. His designs for interiors, furniture, friezes, and garden ornaments were more extravagant than those actually built at the time, but his prints were highly influential. They showed the artist's great imagination and technical skill. The architectural decoration in this print is thoroughly baroque in its massive scale, dense ornamentation, and complex use of classical motifs. If built, such an interior would be executed in various stones or marbles, complemented by carved wood and stucco decoration, and adorned with gilded or painted elements. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
