Color PaletteThese three designs for chairs attest to the popularity of the revival of medieval Gothic style. The designs were not faithful to a historical model, however. Instead, the chairs evoke a vaguely Gothic aesthetic by incorporating generic motifs of elaborate tracery moldings in both geometric and curvilinear patterns. Chippendale noted that "their feet are almost all different, and may be of use to those that are unacquainted with this sort of work." The Gothic soon fell out of fashion, and this plate was not included in the 1762 edition of The Director. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
