Color PaletteThis grand canopy bed is elaborately carved with rococo detail and hung with sumptuous drapery. At the far right, the print includes a vertical cross section of the bed frame. This is combined, rather confusingly, with one quarter of a design for the horizontal underside of the canopy: The oval radial pattern and surrounding diagonal trellis moldings were to be reproduced symmetrically to form the whole. In the middle is a simple schematic diagram of the hidden pulleys and cords that draw the bed curtains. This image appeared in all three editions of The Director. — ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
